Rockets and Space

The Glenn L. Martin Company began producing missiles in 1945 and is still in the aerospace industry as the Lockheed Martin Company. Housed in the old Glenn L. Martin Company buildings in Middle River, Maryland, STEngineering and Rocket Lab continue the legacy by still producing aerospace items.

Rosie and The Martin Company

Because world wars were total wars which required governments to utilize their entire populations for the purpose of defeating their enemies, millions of women were encouraged to work in industry and take over jobs previously done by men. During World War I women across the United States were employed in jobs previously done by men. World War II was similar to World War I in that massive conscription of men led to a shortage of available workers and therefore a demand for labor which could only be fully filled by employing women.

Glenn L. Martin

Born in 1886 in Macksburg, Iowa, “The Flying Dude” was Glenn L. Martin’s nickname shortly after his pioneering flight in 1909. By 1911 he was being mentioned, along with the Wright Brothers and Glenn Curtiss, as one of the leading Americans of powered  flight.

GLM and

Community

Glenn L. Martin came to Middle River, Maryland in 1927 and 1928 quietly looking for real estate for his plan to build an aviation factory. He publicly announced his purchase of about 1260 acres in March of 1929 and officially opened the initial production complex on October 7, 1929, three weeks before the start of the depression on October 29th.

Visitors to the museum can be escorted to the museum's flight line to view over 16 aircraft.
